Chery Tiggo 7 — Common Problems by Pattern
The Tiggo 7 has no safety recall in Australia or the UK to date — its issues are pattern-level, and they cluster around one component: the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox on the Pro 1.6T. Chinese complaint platforms, South African owner reports and Australian assessments describe the same behaviours: low-speed jerking, clunks when shifting on inclines, and in a smaller number of Chinese-market cases, slipping or “gearbox failure” messages. The engine itself is the good news — mechanical failures are notably absent from medium-term owner reports across markets.
1. Dual-clutch behaviour (Pro 1.6T 7DCT, 2023–25)
Unverified owner report: from 12365auto.com complaint records (瑞虎7 / 7 PLUS), South African owner complaints and reviews, and Australian problem-report aggregations on CarsGuide, as our research notes recorded the reports on 20 August 2026; we have not verified the reports, and we hold no copy of those sources. Those sources report hesitation and jerking at crawling speeds, a clunk when engaging reverse or shifting on a slope, and jolts on quick lift-off-then-throttle transitions; the Chinese complaint records also include cases of slipping, oil leaks and failure messages. It is the most consistently reported pattern in those sources; we have not measured that comparison. This page has also said that much of this is characteristic dual-clutch calibration rather than component failure; our notes record no cause. Don’t auto-dismiss symptoms as “normal DCT”. What to do: test-drive on a hill, in reverse, in traffic; ask the dealer whether calibration updates apply to your VIN; and treat a “gearbox failure” message as a warranty event to document, never to clear.
The new 1.5T (2025-on) uses a different 6DCT and is too recent for mature patterns; the Super Hybrid’s single-speed hybrid drive sidesteps the issue entirely.
2. The fuel-gauge oddity
A South African road-test documented the gauge still reading full after 400 km — reported by a single professional source, so we label it exactly that. If your gauge seems optimistic, log actual fill volumes against the odometer for two tanks and show the dealer the numbers; on a car whose official consumption is 7.0 L/100km, arithmetic beats the needle.
3. Early-build interior and electrics (China-market data)
Chinese complaint records on early 瑞虎7 builds list ambient-light lens cracking, dash and door-trim plastic ageing, blurry 360° cameras, window-glass squeaks and new-car 12V battery drain. These are China-market reports on earlier builds — we have not verified them as patterns on export cars, and we say so; treat them as a used-car inspection checklist, not an indictment.
What owners do not report
Unverified owner report: our research notes recorded the report on 20 August 2026 without naming a source; we have not verified the report. Engine failures: this page has said that across Chinese, South African and Australian sources, the 1.5T and 1.6T petrol engines draw almost no mechanical complaints — the recurring themes are calibration, trim and electronics; our notes record that absence across the three markets without a source, a denominator or either engine named, and record the other patterns separately, not as themes set against it. And note what the record shows brand-wide: Chery’s Australian recalls (tracker here) concern the Omoda 5, Tiggo 4 and Tiggo 8 — not this car.
Buying used — 5-minute checklist
- Hill test: reverse uphill from a stop, then creep forward — judge the DCT with your own spine.
- Ask for gearbox software/calibration history by VIN.
- Two-tank fuel-log if the gauge behaviour seems off.
- Check every interior light lens and camera view on early cars.
- Confirm which generation you’re buying — 1.6T Pro vs new 1.5T differ in fuel grade and parts.
