MG HS Common Problems by Year (2019–present)
The MG HS has one Australian safety recall that matters urgently — a fire-risk fault at an electrical ground stud on 2021–2022 plug-in hybrids, with a UK recall of similar description for EHS cars built from 28 July 2020 to 27 October 2022 — and three problem areas owners report most consistently: low-speed hesitation from the dual-clutch gearbox, infotainment freezes, and 12V battery drain. Here is what is officially documented, what is owner-reported, and how to check your own car.
Official recalls — check your VIN first
| Market | Reference | Cars affected | Issue | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | REC-005652 (campaign RMGHSEVPTC) | HS PHEV & +EV 2021–2022 5,168 vehicles | Carpet underlay may be positioned between the nut and the electrical ground stud. If the nut loosens, the wiring beneath the floor could overheat and may cause a fire inside the vehicle. The register’s hazard statement names “injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders”. | Free inspection, and rectification where necessary. |
| United Kingdom | R/2023/050 | HS Plug-in (EHS), built 28 July 2020 to 27 October 2022 3,291 vehicles | The PTC ground wire may not be correctly anchored to the body, with a risk of over-heating. This page has called this fault the same as the Australian recall’s; neither notice says so, and we have not verified it. | The UK file gives the remedy as “Check the insulation and modifying if necessary.” |

We read it as the same campaign mirrored in both markets, and as a pattern across MG recalls; neither notice says so, and we have not verified it. This is high-voltage-adjacent equipment: the fix is dealer-only — do not attempt to inspect or repair the ground-stud connection yourself.
Owner-reported patterns — not recalls, but consistent
1. Low-speed hesitation from the dual-clutch gearbox (petrol & early PHEV)
Unverified owner report: from owner threads on forum.whichmobilitycar.co.uk, complaint records on 12365auto.com and a thread on mgevs.com, as our research notes recorded the reports on 19 August 2026; we have not verified the reports, and we hold no copy of those sources. Those sources report hesitation or clicking from the automatic when pulling away, with a momentary sense of lost torque that returns, and noises when moving slowly and when reversing; the Chinese complaint records also include cases of gearbox oil seepage and of dual-mass flywheel damage, and the mgevs.com thread says the early PHEV’s hesitation was resolved by software in a later phase. Our notes give Chinese dealers’ description of it as characteristic of the dry dual-clutch design, and revised ECU calibrations as reducing it. It is the most consistently reported HS complaint in those sources; we have not measured that comparison. This page has also said that Australian owner reviews report it, that the clutch engagement can feel jerky at crawling speeds, in parking and in stop-start traffic, that the “lost power” sensation returns immediately, and that the flywheel cases are fewer; our notes name no Australian source and record none of the rest.
What to do: if your HS hesitates at low speed, ask the dealer whether a gearbox/ECU calibration update applies to your VIN before accepting “they all do that”. If you’re buying used, test-drive specifically in slow traffic and reverse-parking.
2. Infotainment freezes and lag
Unverified owner report: from forum.whichmobilitycar.co.uk, bumper.co’s MG HS reliability post and autoguide.top, as our research notes recorded the reports on 19 August 2026; we have not verified the reports, and we hold no copy of those sources. Those sources report frozen or slow 10.1-inch touchscreens, Bluetooth drop-outs and sluggish navigation. This page has also said that they are reported across model years in UK and Australian owner communities, and that climate controls route through the screen on many versions; our notes name no Australian source and record neither the model years nor the climate controls. By our reading it is usually an annoyance rather than a fault that strands you: test every screen function on a used car.
3. 12V battery drain (including the current generation)
Unverified owner report: from owner threads on mgevs.com, as our research notes recorded the report on 19 August 2026; we have not verified the report, and we hold no copy of that source. Those threads report the 12V auxiliary battery going flat after the car stands for three days or more, including on current (2025–2026) HS PHEVs, and give one cause: the infotainment backlight failing to switch off when the car is locked. They report that control-unit replacement did not fix it, and our notes give the root cause as software. This page has also said that software updates have been issued progressively; our notes record none of this. If your HS repeatedly wakes to a flat 12V battery, ask the dealer for the latest software rather than just a new battery.
Pattern sources: forum.whichmobilitycar.co.uk (multiple threads); 12365auto.com complaint records (名爵HS — gearbox noise, seepage, flywheel cases); mgevs.com HS/EHS owner forum (gearbox behaviour and 12V drain threads, 2020–2026). Each owner-reported pattern above is labelled as an unverified owner report; we do not republish individual owners’ posts. Brand-level context: in the UK 2022 Driver Power survey, 35% of MG owners reported a fault in the first year — a brand statistic, not HS-specific.
What the HS does not have
When we searched the Australian Government recall register for “MG” on 26 September 2026 (a browser reading, not an archived listing), it listed 12 recalls, and the only HS recall among them was REC-005652. In the copies of the UK recall file we archived on 12 and 26 September 2026, the only HS or EHS recall is R/2023/050. Neither is an engine, brake or airbag recall, and our research notes record no engine-failure pattern for the HS. This page has also said that owner communities generally describe the 1.5T engine itself as robust, and that the recurring complaints cluster around calibration and electronics, not hardware; our notes record nothing on the engine’s robustness, and the owner patterns they record are the gearbox, infotainment and 12V items above.
Buying used — 5-minute checklist
- PHEV: confirm that recall REC-005652 (Australia, 2021–2022 cars) or R/2023/050 (UK, EHS built 28 July 2020 to 27 October 2022) was completed (dealer can check by VIN).
- Test-drive at crawling speed and in reverse — feel for DCT hesitation beyond what you can live with.
- Work every infotainment function, Bluetooth pairing included.
- Ask when the 12V battery was last replaced and whether software is current.
- Check service history against the official schedule — intervals differ by market.
