MG HS guides: Overview Service schedule Running costs Oil & fluids Problems Recalls (MG)

The MG HS is two different cars under one name: the first generation (2018–2024, including the eHS plug-in) and the second generation launched July 2024 with petrol, full-hybrid and plug-in options. Before anything else: if you own a first-generation HS plug-in, check the recalls below — in Australia, the fire-risk recall REC-005652 lists 2021–2022 HS PHEV and HS +EV cars (5,168 vehicles); in the UK, R/2023/050, which names a risk of over-heating, lists EHS cars built from 28 July 2020 to 27 October 2022 (3,291 vehicles).

⚠ G1 PHEV owners — check your VIN. Australia recall REC-005652 (HS PHEV & +EV 2021–2022): carpet underlay can sit between a nut and an electrical ground stud; if the nut loosens, overheating and vehicle fire risk. The register’s hazard statement names “injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders”, and its remedy is an inspection and rectification where necessary, free of charge. UK: R/2023/050 lists EHS cars built from 28 July 2020 to 27 October 2022 for a PTC ground wire that may not be correctly anchored, with a risk of over-heating; the UK file says nothing about cost. This page has called R/2023/050 the UK equivalent of REC-005652; neither notice says so, and we have not verified it. Details and VIN-check links on our MG Recalls Tracker.
Correction note: This box used to give the recall as a vehicle fire risk without the risk to people that the register states, to describe the remedy as a free dealer fix, and, with the opening paragraph, to give one 2021–2022 year label for both markets. It now quotes the register’s hazard and remedy, gives the UK recall’s own build span and count, and marks our description of R/2023/050 as the UK equivalent as our reading.

Hybrid drive motors (official): HEV traction motor up to 146 kW / 340 Nm; PHEV up to 154 kW / 340 Nm — the electric side, not the petrol engine, does the heavy lifting.

OEM-verified: read from the MG HS Range Owner’s Manual (UK, 2025) and the MG HS Owner’s Manual (Middle East edition). Both are published by MG, so where they agree they corroborate our reading rather than adding an independent check of it — which is why these figures carry the label our verification ladder gives an official primary document standing on its own, not the two-source rule.
